Daddy just got a new office with a big empty wall, so we decided to help him out and create some masterpieces for him to hang. I gave each child a canvas (very cheap from Michael's, of course). I then gave them different colors of acrylic paint and some brushes and told them to pick one color to cover the entire canvas so that there would be no blank white spots. We then let it dry and they continued with their painting.

Yesterday, we took daddy out to lunch from work and the kids were so proud to see their paintings hanging in his office!

Bug Jar

The kids have been very interested in bugs lately. They love ctaching ants and fireflies. I made them these bug jars out of plastic peanut butter containers. I painted a bee and a lady bug on the lid and then we used a small drill bit to put a few holes in the top. The kids have been catching bugs all morning. So fun!!

4th of July Shirts

Like I mentioned before, the kids will be in a 4th of July parade tomorrow and we made them special shirts to wear. We used sponges in the shapes of stars. You can either make them yourself or buy them at Michael's. We used fabric paint and put stars all over the front and back of the shirt! We used paint brushes to touch up any holes that were made by the sponges.

They can't wait to wear them tomorrow. They are with daddy right now decorating their bikes that they will ride in the parade.

4th of July Hats

Every year we have a parade in our neighborhood that the kids can ride their bikes in for the 4th of July. We made some cool hats that we got from Michael's and then decorated it with some star stickers! They can't wait to wear these in the parade!

We got some unfinished wood frames and painted them so that we could put the watercolor initials in them. We are hanging them in the kids' playroom.

We used some acrylic paint and the kids just covered every bit of the wood. They are so proud of their masterpieces!

We saw this one at Blissfully Domestic. I couldn't wait to do that with the kids and hang their creations in their playroom.

1. Using your computer, make the largest letter you can in whatever font you want

2. Put clear contact paper over the letter and using a knife, trace around the outline of the letter

3. Stick the letter on the card stock

4. Paint away

5. Once the paint is dry, take the contact paper off

Father's Day Card for Dad REPOST from V-day

For Valentine's Day we made a giant card for daddy and the kids named all the reasons why they loved him and I wrote them on smaller hearts in the middle. This could also be done for Father's Day. Instead of hearts, you could use Stars. VERY cute! I must say that I think that this was by far my husband's favorite card EVER.

Father's Day Stepping Stone

This is the 3rd year in a row that we have made stepping stones for Father's Day. Both of my kids make their very own every year, give it to their daddy and he puts them in our garden. The kids LOVE making them because each year the kids put their hand print right in the middle and then they decorate it. They love seeing how much their hands have grown on their older ones. In addition to the hand print, we also write their name and the year on them. We love them! The stone kits we got were from Michael's as they are on sale EVERY year at this time. They are a wonderful keepsake.

Father's Day Beverage Cooler

We have already begun getting ready for Father's Day! It is kind of risky at this point because it is SO VERY difficult for a 3 and a 5 year old to keep a secret.

We decorated Colorful Foam Drink Cozies that I got from Michael's with foam stickers. On the bottom it says who it is from. The kids had a lot of fun with them and actually want one of their own, which I find strange because neither one of them drinks anything that comes in a can (soda). I suppose I could put water bottles in them. :)

Peanut Butter Suprise Cookies

As many of you know, my family LOVES ANYTHING with peanut butter and chocolate. The kids and I decided to try this recipe just because it looked so gosh darn yummy. Thanks again, my dear friend Martha Stewart. You came through again! :)

Just to mix things up, I followed the recipe from here, and did half the batch on cookie sheets as the directions called for and the other half I put in mini muffin tins. They were both equally delicious.

Last summer we raised some butterflies of our own and the kids had so much fun doing it. They were amazed at every step of the metamorphosis. We got caterpillars and everything we needed to properly raise our 5 new friends from Bugville. I highly recommend doing this with your kids. It comes with a DVD that explains the process and what to expect and tells you how to care for them. I can't tell you how engrossed the kids were. They loved it. I must admit that I thought it was pretty cool too. :)

Franklin Park Conservatory

We went on a field trip to the conservatory to check out the butterflies that they have every year. The kids had so much fun looking for them and see what kind they found on their Butterfly Guide! I highly recommend the visit if you live in Ohio. It was so much fun!

I apologize for the lack of posts lately. It has been pretty busy at the LuckyMe! house. The end of the school year for my kids and for me (I am a teacher too) has definitely kept us on our toes and we even managed to take a VERY exciting trip to Chicago. Sock Puppets

Using some kids socks we made a cat and dog sock puppet. We also used felt and fabric glue as well as pom poms for the nose. Make sure the glue dries completely before letting the kids use them. You may also need to put a piece of cardboard in the sock so that the top and botton don't get glued together. Hours of fun!!!

Paper Plate Lady Bugs and Bowl Turtles

Using some things we have a round the house, we made some lasy bugs and turtles. We painted both first and let them dry. After the lady bug plate was dry we glued down some black spots and a head with googley eyes. We also included pipe cleaner antenae. For the turtly we used construction paper for a head, tail and legs. So cute!

Kid Created Flower Hanging Basket

My husband took the kids to the nursery to pick out some flowers and this hanging basket to give to me for Mother's Day, but it was so much fun for them that this could be done any time. They picked out some colorful flowers and planted them in the basket using their little shovels.

They were so proud of the finished product. Anytime someone comes over to our house, they take them in the back yard to show them the hanging basket they created. They also love to use their watering cans to water them. I will never forget to water them because they ask to water them all the time :)

When I pulled out the box of sun catcher supplies the other day, the kids saw the paint dots and wanted to play with them as well. We made pictures just with dots today. We made flowers, caterpillars, and creatures. We also had some pictures that were made of circles that they could just fill in. So much fun! My son then began practicing writing his numbers using just dots. The possibilities are endless. We have also done this using stamp pads and fingerprints.

Spring Felt Board

We made felt boards about a year ago by covering pieces of cardboard with felt and gluing it on. I cut out a bunch of basic shapes at first and the kids had a ball. Then I made them a set of cut outs that would help them build snowmen and it was a huge hit. As I noticed my son making another snowman today, I thought it was about time to cut out some spring shapes. Here are our creations today. :)

My daughter and I made caterpillars out of buttons. They were so much fun and very cute. We also added some googley eyes so we could see where the head was. :)

We liked our caterpillars to be multicolored but you could easily make these using patterns.

It was beautiful outside so we decided to go outside and paint!! We took clean, empty spaghetti sauce jars that will be some new flower vases and painted them using acrylic paints. They dried so quickly by sitting them in the sun for a bit. So beautiful!

Simple Chick Craft

I found these cute little chicks on kiddio . They are so cute! We made these today and they are currently in little hands flying all around the house.

We used a cup and traced circles onto card stock and folded the circles in half. Then we made little beaks and the kids colored the bodies with crayons and colored pencils. We glued on some googley eyes and taped a couple of feathers underneath the body.

Instead of taking our nice Easter baskets outside in the wet grass on Easter for the Easter Egg Hunt, we made these. It is really nice that there is a handle and the kids can easily carry them around.

We took an empty gallon milk jug, cut off the top and added eyes, nose, and ears and then we drew whishers and a mouth on the face with a permanent marker.

We used one of our 40% off coupons at Michael's the other day and got some clay. We made some spring bugs and they are baking in the oven as I type. :)

The kids had a ball with it. They played with it for a long time this morning. I used a toothpick to put holes in them before we baked them so that we could hang them up too. Too cute!

Jelly Bean Bracelets

Thursdays were the only days we didn't have any place to go, so we decided at the beginning of the school year it would be called Pajama Thursdays. The kids look forward to it all week and ask practically every morning if it is Thursday yet so that they can keep their pajamas on. I can't say I blame them. I would love to wear my pjs every day too. This is why in some of my posts, you can see the headless pictures of my kids in their pajamas while doing crafts.

This week on Pajama Thursday, we made home made soft pretzels. We love them so much. We haven't made them in a while, so I decided today we would make a double batch and freeze them. They are so good to make as sandwiches! I have posted about these pretzels before here. Check it out and make some for your family. You won't be sorry!

I remember making these when I was little. You take some egg shells (make sure they are cleaned really well) and we put 2 yellow pom poms inside and glued on googley eyes and an orange felt beak. They are a cute little center piece to any table.

Water Bottle Flowers

I have seen these done on several blogs and REALLY wanted to try them out since Daisies are my FAVORITE flower. The kids had a great time with it. My son said it was just like stamping! We used a water bottle and dipped it in some paint and then used the cap of the bottle to stamp the center of the flower. Then we painted stems and leaves. We then used the cap again to make a sun and drew some rays. Ahhhh Happy First Day of Spring!

March is In Like a Lion and Out Like a Lamb Craft

Today we made lions and lambs for March. The kids had a lot of fun with them, especially when I said we would need to use a lot of glue to make sure the cotton balls stick. :)

It was funny too, because they understood completely what it meant to have March start out like a lion and end like a Lamb. No place illustrates that better than living in Ohio!

Irish Potato Candy

When I used to work in the brick and mortar schools, one of my co-workers used to bring this in to school every St. Patrick's Day. They are called Irish Potatoes because the cinnamon makes them look like potatoes. She used to keep them in the teacher work room for everyone to share. I loved them so much and it has been a few years since I have had them since I moved away. I had to ask for the recipe and she was nice enough to share. Thanks Cathy.

Irish Potatoes

¼ lb soft butter or margarine
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
6 cups 10x powdered sugar
8 oz coconut
Cinnamon

Mix together margarine, salt, vanilla and milk. Gradually add sugar. Mix well. Add coconut. Mix well. Remove from bowl and knead well.
Roll about 15 balls at a time, place in a plastic bag- put cinnamon in the plastic bag, and shake. Repeat with rest of batter.
Put potatoes on cookie sheet lined with wax paper.

Refrigerate over night.

Butterfly Craft

Today we made butterflies out of craft sticks and coffee filters. We used washable markers to color on the coffee filters and then we used a spray bottle to gently mist the filters to make the colors run. Allow it to dry or microwave it for a minute. Then we folded the top and the bottom of the filter and sanwiched it in between 2 craft sticks and glued them together. Lastly we added googley eyes and some pipe cleaner antenae!

Craft Stick Flowers

Our Dafodils have started coming up in our flower beds. I hate to tell them that they will most likely be seeing snow soon. We are so excited to see our flowers bloom that we decided to make some of our own. We made these out of craft sticks and buttons. The craft sticks that we had were already colored. but you could easily color plain ones with markers or paint. We glued them all together and let them dry. It is so nice to be thinking about spring!!!

Finger Print Rainbows

As you may remember, I have 2 frames in my kitchen that my kids put artwork in every season as seen here. We have had our snowmen in there for quite a while and I have been ready for our spring picture. We made rainbows out of their finger prints using stamp pads and then we made a sun using the side of their fist and orange rays using their whole finger. We cut the sun and the rainbow out and pasted it on a blue sheet of paper and glued a few stretched out cotton balls for clouds. Now I am a lot happier to see the spring pictures especially since we had warmer weather this weekend. I am ready for SPRING!!

Art Work Wind Socks

It is really windy here today so we decided to make some wind socks. The first thing we did was make some artwork. We took a large sheet of art paper and my son wanted to draw his family on his, but my daughter decided that she wanted to cover hers with stickers. Then we taped some crape paper as tails for the wind sock. The last thing we did was punch two holes in it and tied yarn through them so that we could hang our wind sock. We have already been running through the yard (as you may be able to tell by my son's smushed wind sock). The kids had a lot of fun playing with them today.

Tissue Paper Shamrock

We made shamrocks out of tissue paper and paper plates today. It was a lot of fun! We cut tissue paper squares and then we cut out a Shamrock shape out of paper plates. Then we spread some glue on one section of the plate and took our pencils and put a square of tissue on the end of the pencil and smoothed it up. Then we put the tip of the pencil on the plate and continued to do this until the Shamrock was covered.

My 2 and a half year old had no interest in this project the way I had intended, which was absolutely fine. She preferred to just cover the plate with the tissue paper. She was very happy with her shamrock and so was I. My 5 year old was very determined to cover the shamrock and did a great job!

My kiddos love to play hide and seek so I decided to use their shamrock art we completed yesterday to play a little game. We cut out all of the shamrock stamps from our paper and then the kids sat in another room while I hid a bunch of shamrocks all over our living room. They loved searching for them all. After they found them, they wanted to keep going on so the kids would hide them from each other and the other kiddo would look for them. It was a lot of fun.

We used our heart foam stickers that we had left over from Valentine's Day and made shamrock stamps out of them. I hot glued 3 layers of cardboard together and then we put the heart stickers on to make our Shamrock Stamp. We used our favorite giant stamp pads we got from Oriental Trading Company and stamped away on our paper. My son loved making a pattern between light and dark green.

A Pot of Gold at the End of a Rainbow (mobile)

Today we made rainbows out of scraps of construction paper. We got the idea from No Time for Flashcards. Then we made pots of gold to put at the ends of the rainbow since we are now in March and it will soon be St. Patrick's Day!!

Another Book Idea....

We use these bags every now and again to have scavenger hunts for small things. We used them for this fall craft and we used them again here. I made a pocket out of a clear plastic sheet protector on the front of the bag big enough for an index card to fit in to remind the kids what we were looking for. We were focusing on our colors. This is an activity that can take a couple of weeks if you choose to do one color each day. After the child has found things that are the color of the day, take a photo of all of it and make a book out of it! They are so proud of the things they have found.

Personalized Books For Kids

I made a counting Book for my son years ago, but I used white cardstock pages and laminated them with laminating sheets and then took it to my local office store to be spiral bound. That worked out really well and he still loves looking at it. When I saw these blank board books on the Oriental Trading Website, I had to order some and use them for my daughter's book.

I took pictures of things of hers that she loves and printed them off on sticker paper, stuck the sticker to the board book and then I put laminating sheets over those. I personalized the cover with a picture of her and SHE LOVES THIS BOOK! She has been taking it to bed with her to read over and over.

We used our glass stones again! We cut out a leaf out of card stock and drew a line of glue across it and the kids placed the stones across the glue. Then they added some pipe cleaner antenae and some googley eyes!

I have had these glass stones for a while because I used them for an activity once in the classroom. The kids have loved playing with them, so I decided to use some of them in a couple of crafts this week.

We made a picture frame out of craft sticks and used some markers to color them. Then the kids placed the stones on the frame where they wanted them and I used the hot glue gun to stick them on. The kids were very proud of their creation and loved having a photo shoo0t to choose a picture to put in them.

Homemade Musical Instruments

We have started a band and are taking our show on the road. I bet if you listen closely, you could hear our instruments right now....even in other countries. It is a little loud, but so much fun. They are learning a lot as well.

We made a guitar out of a shoebox lid and several rubber bands of various sizes and thicknesses. We talked about the different sounds the rubber bands made and why they all sounded different.

We made a kazoo by taking a toilet paper roll and covering it with scrapbook paper. Then we punched a hole in the side (so the wax paper wouldn't be blown off when they talked into it). Then we covered one end with wax paper and fastened it on with a rubber band. We talked about the vibrations that are made with the sounds we make.

We made a drum/shaker by taking a container with a metal bottom and covering it with scrapbook paper and putting some dried beans inside. They can shake this or use pencils to drum on it.

We made our jingle bell instrument by putting beads and jingle bells on a pipe cleaner and connecting the ends together.

Foamerator

We hopped in the tub with our suits and started making some crazy bubbles. We cut off the bottom of a water bottle and we used some old wash cloths and used a rubber band to put them on the end of the water bottle. The kids then dipped the washcloth in some water to get the wash cloth wet and then we dipped it in some bubble bath and blew in the top of the bottle to make some bubbles. Such fun!! We found the idea here.

Beach in a jar

We made a beach in a jar! Just when we are about to get some more snow, we are ready to look forward to warmer weather. We used a canning jar and poured in some sand. Then we put in some sea shells. It is a very simple thing to do, but my kids were born 5 miles from a beach and we miss it some days. They played with the shells for about 30 minutes even before we started making our beach. Whenever we feel like we are ready for the sun, we can look at our jars and day dream.

Smoothies

We had a delicious treat during our Hawaiian Luau. We made Strawberry yogurt smoothies. The first thing we did though was decorate our cups. We used some of the left over flower cut outs from our lei making and glued them on plastic cups.

Next we made our smoothies:

2 cups of strawberries (1/2 a quart)

1/2 cup yogurt (we used strawberry yogurt)

1 cup of ice

1/4 cup orange juice

2 T. sugar

Throw all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Tissue paper flowers and grass skirts

Continuing with the Hawaiian luau we had on Monday, we also made some tissue paper flowers and grass skirts. First we got some green tissue paper and cut slits all the way to the top except for a couple of inches at the top. Then we tucked it in to the bottoms of their suits.

Next we piled layers of tissue paper traced a circle from a plate, cut out the circle and folded them in a fan and wrapped a pipe cleaner around it and pulled each layer up to form a flower. We wrapped those around their ankles.

After we did this, we turned up the Hawaiian music (thank you internet) and danced around. We also did a limbo contest.

Hawaiian luau party--Making a lei

The kids and I all have the day off for President's Day, so since we just bought the kids some new bathing suits from the Old Navy sale, they have been dying to wear them. We are all ready for some warmer weather, so today we cranked up the heat and decided to have a Hawaiian Luau party. Every day this week I will be sharing some of the things we did to celebrate. The first thing we did was work on looking like we were a part of a Luau. We made our own lei. I found a template of some flowers online and cut them out. I used a small screw driver to punch holes in the center of the flowers making it easier to string. Then we got some colorful straws and cut them in 1-1 1/2 inch pieces. Next we put them on the string. We alternated flowers and straws and they turned out really cute.

Daddy's Valentine's Card

Today we made Daddy a Valentine's Day card. The kids glued hearts left over from our heart art on a posterboard heart and told me all the reasons why they loved daddy, so I could write it down for them. They are so excited to give it to him.

Valentine's Day Cookies

This is a recipe based on the one I found here.

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup of sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla extract
3 3/4 cups of all purpose flour

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla and mix until smooth. Add the cream. Next add the flour and baking powder and mix into the mixture. Cover the dough and chill for 2 to 3 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters and place them 1 inch apart on the baking sheets covered with parchment paper, a silpat, or greased with butter. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, until bottoms and edges of cookies are light brown. Remove from baking sheet and cool on wire racks.

Then I used the icing that we used for our Christmas cookies from my friend Jenn's recipe.

Basic icing:
4 cups of confectioner's sugar
1/4 cup of unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup of heavy cream
2 tsp. vanilla

I was feeling a little under the weather tonight, but making these sure did perk me up. Perhaps it was all the sugar in the air. :)

Valentine Stamps

We made some stamps out of our foam stickers. We stuck the stickers to some toy blocks we had and then we put them in the ink pad and stamped some paper that we are going to use as wrapping paper for Daddy's Valentine's Day presents. They turned out really well and we were able to take the stickers off and clean the blocks up to throw back in the block box. I can only hope that the kids will be able to keep the secret about what we got Daddy. ;)

Valentine Dessert Pizza

The kids loved every bit of this process. We used frozen bread dough for the crust (thawed in the refrigerator).

Then we divided the bread dough into 4 parts. The kids smashed and flattened out their part and I cut them into hearts. I lightly greased a cookie sheet and put the dough in the oven at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes or so. Just until the tops were lightly golden brown.

Then we spread peanut butter over the entire thing and the kids put semi sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter/chocolate swirled chips, m & ms, and marshmallows. Then I put them in the oven for a couple of minutes just until the marshmallows got soft and all the other toppings were ooey gooey. One heart of their dessert pizza will last them all week. You certainly can make more hearts so that they are more of an individual serving, but I took the easy way out. :)

Valentine Heart Flowers

Heart Sun Catchers

We made some heart sun catchers today using laminating sheets. You could also use contact paper, but I have found that these are a little bit easier to work with. I cut out a heart shape and then cut out the inside of the heart, leaving about 1/2 an inch border. Then I stuck the heart on the laminating sheet and cut off the excess around the heart. Then the kids stuck little squares of tissue paper all over them, completely covering it. I then punched a hole in the top and tied some cording so we could hang it.

Secret Valentine messages

I used a white crayon (try to avoid the washable ones) to write on some white paper and told the kids I had written them a secret message. They were blown away when they started painting and saw the message. You can't really see the message in the picture, but it was there. They wanted to draw pictures with the crayons and give each other secret messages. It was really cute.

Valentine Shirt

My daughter wanted to have a Valentine shirt, so we pulled out the sponges, brushes, paint and plain white T-Shirt (we bought several at Michael's when they were $2 a piece). We dipped heart shaped sponges in the paint and then pressed them on the shirt. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMETHING IN THE SHIRT SO IT DOES NOT GO THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE, can you tell I have done it before ;). We just put a magazine inside the shirt. Then we used the brush to get any white spots covered. After our 3 hearts were on the shirt, I got a brush and outlined the hearts in black.

Make sure you read the directions on your fabric paint. Ours says you can't wash it for 72 hours. We love painting shirts. We seem to do it all the time. She looks so cute with this shirt over her red thermal long sleeved shirt.

Valentine Bugs Felt Board

Using the boards and shapes that we already made from our Winter Felt Friends, I cut out a bunch of hearts in different sizes and let the kids loose with them. At first, they weren't sure what to make, but when I suggested bugs, a lightbulb went off and there was no stopping them. They spent over an hour playing with their felt boards today. They really love them.

Groundhog's Day Craft

Happy Groundhog's Day!! Here is a cute groundhog made mostly of hearts. You will need a large brown heart for the head, a small white heart for the teeth, a small brown heart to cut in half to make 2 ears and a black heart for a nose. Milk Jug Bird Feeder

Tuesday night it snowed 2 inches and then there was frozen rain (notice the ice covering the tree branches) followed by about 6 inches of snow on top of that Wednesday. We started feeling bad for the birds, so I remembered a bird feeder I made when I was in school made out of a milk carton. We used the small cafeteria style cardboard ones then. I figured using a big milk jug would work just as well.

I had a wooden dowel laying around so we used that as a perch for them. You certainly don't need a perch, but you could also use a wooden spoon as one as well.

The kids desperately thought that we needed to decorate the feeder, so I let them loose with the Sharpie markers. We have had several visitors to the feeder already. I hope we made thier little birdie day.

Valentine flowers that last FOREVER!

We decorated a piece of paper with foam stickers and glued it around a toilet paper roll. We cut some hearts out of construction paper and pushed them onto a pipe cleaner and put a button or a bead on the top. Then we pushed some leaves on to make them look more full. The flowers will be too heavy to keep the "vase" upright, so you will need to weigh it down somehow. We put a handfull of beads in the bottom. Voila! These flowers will last a lot longer than any other you will receive. Too cute!!!

A Snowman Snack!

I saw these in my Family Fun magazine this month and couldn't wait to make them. The kids loved this healthy snack kabob. We hadn't done anything with snowmen lately. :)

I asked them what their favorite part was and they of course said the chocolate chips that were held on by the peanut butter. They are so crazy when it comes to peanut butter and chocolate.

Funny Feet!!

We took a walk on the wild side today (funny, I know). I cut out some animal feet shapes and the kids painted them. I used the glue gun to glue a cardboard strap so their feet could slip in. We had a frog and a duck running around here for a while today and they had a great time making LOTS of duck and froggy sounds to go along with it ;)

If I were to do this over again, I would have made the straps longer and cut slits in the feet to tape the straps under the feet. They both loved them and requested other animal feet; however, my drawing capabilities are definitely limited. Duck and frog feet were the best I could do. :)

Thread the Tube Game

Today we took empty toilet paper rolls and attached a craft stick to the bottom with a stapler and then covered the tube in decorative paper. Then we threaded a big button with cording (about 15 inches) and put a small hole in the tube and threaded it through there and knotted it. The object of the game is to swing the button up and get it in the top of the tube.

Valentine Treasure Hunt

I found these cute little wooden boxes at Michael's for $.50 each and I had the kids decorate their treasure boxes with their wood markers. Then I got some conversation hearts and wrapped them in foil (to look like treasure) and hid them. They went treasure hunting A LOT today. Even after the conversation heart candy was gone, they put pretend coins from their cash register in them and hid them for each other to find. We played hotter and colder in order to help find them and then we tried the treasure hunt by giving 3 clues to find them throughout the entire house. It was a lot of fun!

Heart Art

This project was so exciting for my daughter. She will be 3 in March and we spent almost an hour on this. My son wasn't as interested, but still had some fun.

I cut out a slew of hearts of different sizes and colors. My daughter and I sorted them into different piles by color.

Then I let them work on their art! My son put hearts on his page representing certain people in our family. He added faces or hearts representing something about that person. I added the cat in the middle because, like it or not, she is in our family too. My son and the cat don't get along very well together. :)

My daughter went to town! We had so much fun. We had our own little lesson and she did so well! We named colors, counted, and talked about bigger and smaller. I would tell her to do some things like, "Put this small blue heart on a bigger yellow one." We had a lot of fun and we did this for a long time. She loved it!!

Valentine Caterpillar

We have made these caterpillars before. The kids love playing with egg cartons and we even have a book that has a bunch of egg carton projects in it. Here we made them Valentine caterpillars since they have the added hearts on top. The pipe cleaners are really easy to stick through the egg carton and they stay in place well once you have them where you want them.

Microwave Chocolate Cake

We have made this several times and it always hits the spot. Tonight, we used butter though instead of oil because I ran out and it turned out fine. We found it at Her Cup Overfloweth .

Ingredients:

1 Tall Coffee Mug
4 Tablespoons flour
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons baking cocoa
1 Egg
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil (I used melted butter today because we ran out of oil)
3 Tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A splash of vanilla extract

After you mix all of the dry ingredients, you add the rest and stir completely. Get into those corners of the bottom of the mug or you will have pockets of flour when you get the cake out. Then microwave it for 3 minutes.

One mug of cake has at least 2 servings (or enough for two kiddos and their mommy). We covered ours in Chocolate frosting and some conversation hearts. Tasty!

Valentine Bug Magnet

This little love bug turned out so cute. We stuck the wings on, which was easy since ours were stickers. You could very well cut out your own hearts from craft foam. Then we made the antenae and put the beads on the end and glued them on as well as the googley eyes. Finally, we put a magnet on the back so that we could put it on our fridge to clip things on.

Valentine's Day Mobile

We have been taking a snowman break and focusing on Valentine's Day. The temperatures are below zero and school around here is cancelled because of the cold. It is time to focus on things that will warm your heart....get it...heart? HAHA!!

The first thing we did to make our mobiles was turn hand prints into hearts on some craft foam. Then I cut out a heart shape around it and punched some holes in the bottom.

Then we made finger print hearts using ink pads on some little foam hearts (we did both sides). Then I punched some holes in them and attached the little hearts to the big heart with yarn.

Heart Crayons

Home Made Valentine Gifts

Here a couple of Valentine's Day gifts ideas:

We did this one last year (pre-blog). We got some plain terra cotta pots and used some paint pens and felt heart stickers to decorate it. Then we put a cute little plant in it from the store. Notice there is no plant in it now. Ours didn't stand a chance. I am just not good with indoor plants. :)

This year we made these cute frames. Happy early Valentine's Day honey!

I put a close up of each child in their frame. Sooooo cute.

Here, we just bought an unfinished frame from Michael's and used acrylic paint. When the paint dried, they put some foam heart stickers on them. My son wanted something written on it, so we personalized it a little bit with a cute little message from each of them.

Paper Plate Snowmen

IT IS FREEZING OUTSIDE!! The kids want to go play in the snow, but this is really the best I can do right now. We made snowmen out of paper plates and gave them ear muffs and a scarf. Don't the snowmen look happy being inside?

Bottle Snowmen

We made some snowmen today out of yogurt smoothie bottles. I covered them in batting and hot glued it on so that it would dry faster.

Next we made the hats. For that we used some black craft foam. We turned the bottles over and pressed the opening of the bottle on the foam to make an imprint (I'm too lazy to look for a pencil). From looking at the imprint, I eyeballed it and cut about 1/2 inch bigger than it all the way around. Then we cut out the outside of that circle. Try to leave that inside circle intact, you will need it. The black halo shape fit over the mouth of our bottle with the lid off. Then we took the lid and glued the circle that we cut out of the halo on top. Then we cut out a rectangle that would fit around the lid. We glued that rectangle and put the lid on....voila, a hat.

We used felt to tie on a scarf and a bunch of our other craft items for eyes, noses, buttons, neither child wanted to make a mouth. I glued the pipe cleaner arms on because I used my hot glue gun so that they would stick out.

FINALLY SNOW!!

We finally got enough snow to make snowmen! The kids were so excited! They are right off of our deck and the kids can see them from inside the house. They keep checking on them to see that they are OK. They love to make snowmen because they got a snowman making kit last year and they LOVE it! I must admit that it is so much easier to grab the kit than look all over the house for things that can dress them up. They are going to have a very nice and satisfying nap this afternoon. ;)

Edible Bracelets

As I was standing in line at the grocery store the evening before a huge snow storm was predicted, I was looking at the candy. They had big packs of Gummi Savers candy. I grabbed 2 rolls of them and added them to my snow storm emerency items like milk, bread, and eggs. Well, the storm never happened, but the kids still used their Gummi Savers. They put them on the plastic craft string and made bracelets. One end was taped to the table so they all stayed on the string. They ate a few and then we put them in plastic bags so that they would stay soft and they could eat more tomorrow. Such a yummy treat! They loved it!

Painting Ceramics

The kids were admiring their pottery they painted at a "paint your own pottery" place we went to over the summer and asked if we could go back. At that moment I remembered something....At Michael's, they have little ceramic shapes you can paint and I grabbed some for $.50 a piece one time I was there. I ran to my craft stash and pulled out some acrylic paint and these little ceramic shapes and they got painting. It was a lot of fun, and they weren't the least bit impressed that I produced such an activity so quickly. :)

My son painted 2 cars, one of which he painted like the bat mobile and my daughter painted a lady bug and a butterfly.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Most of this recipe is from Martha Stewart. I added chocolate chips because our family LOVES all things peanut putter and chocolate. You could very easily leave out the chips and put the cute little fork marks on the top and sprinkle them with sugar...makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

2 1/2 cups flour

about 2 cups of chocolate chips (more if we are feeling crazy)

We usually do this in our standing mixer and just start tossing things in. We put the first 4 ingredients in first and mix it until smooth. Then we add the eggs, baking soda and baking powder and mix a little more. Then we put the flour in and mix it. We stir in the chocolate chips by hand.

refrigerate for 4 hours (this is VERY hard)

roll dough into 2 inch balls--i use a 2 inch ice cream scoop

bake at 350 degrees for 18 minutes

Delicious!!!

Ooblek!

When I taught second grade, we did this activity when we learned about matter. When you make Ooblek, you can pick up chunks of it and put it in your hand and then it will "melt" and drip between your fingers. Is it a solid? Is it a liquid?

I let my kids explore with craft sticks at first and then they were loving getting their hands in it. One of our favorite things to do was put our whole hand, palm down, in the middle of the pie plate and have the Ooblek suck your hand down and then it was hard to get your hand back out.

I threw some buttons from our last snowman craft (can you believe that I hadn't cleaned up yet ;) ) in the Ooblek, pushed them down so they were covered, and had them have a treasure hunt. They had a ton of fun.

you can add food coloring in as well if you want

This is a VERY MESSY activity. My suggestion is to do it right before you plan on cleaning anyways HAHA!

The Snowman Melted

My son did this activity at preschool and thought it was hilarious, so he wanted to do it again with his little sister. You get some wax paper and make a puddle of glue in the middle. Then you place googley eyes, yarn for a scarf, orange pipe cleaner for nose, sticks for arms, felt or construction paper for a hat, buttons etc in the puddle. Wait a few days for it to dry and peel off of the wax paper. You can fool your friends by tossing it places and pretending it is an actual melted snowman. Such a HOOT! Ours haven't dried yet, but you get the idea.

Glittery Snow flakes

Do you see a theme with our crafts lately? The kids are dying for some significant snowfall here. We decided to make some snowflakes made out of glue and glitter. I outlined a snowflake in glue on some wax paper and we glittered the heck out of it. Again we waited until the next day for it to dry and I gently peeled it off of the wax paper. I actually dabbed a bit of glue from the hot glue gun and glued it to our kitchen window, but couldn't get a good picture of them to save my life. So close your eyes and imagine a sparkling, clean window with some beautiful glittered snowflakes. HA! If we can't have snow and snowmen outside, we'll make our own inside. :)

Puffy Snowmen

We made 2 dimensional snowmen yesterday and today we decorated them. The snowmen are made out of:

We used brushes and a mustard bottle (from my son's football birthday party) to put it on the poster board and we let it dry overnight. Today we used play doh for carrot noses (we made them yesterday so they could harden as well), felt, googley eyes and sticks from our bushes outside for arms. They turned out really well and the kids really enjoyed making them! The salt even makes them glitter.

All you need to do is use a bunch of foam stickers on a piece of cardboard and then use a roller (the small foam craft size) or a foam brush to brush on some white paint and then put a sheet of paper over it and press all over with your hands. I think we will use hearts for Valentine's Day. Note to self...try making wrapping paper with it next Christmas. It turned out so cute!
